In a real-life Charlotte's Web, a newborn lamb's heartfelt journey to find his place in the herd intertwines with a scientific team’s pioneering quest to uncover the hidden emotions and intelligence of farm animals. THE HIDDEN LIVES OF FARM ANIMALS introduces us to charismatic creatures with big personalities, challenging our fundamental beliefs about these often-overlooked animals. As the scientists' groundbreaking discoveries unfold, they threaten to shake the very foundations of the industrial agriculture system and reshape our understanding of the animal kingdom and our relationship with it.
THE HIDDEN LIVES OF FARM ANIMALS is the first film in the Hidden Lives Trilogy, which explores the hidden inner lives of the diverse animals with whom we share our planet.

The Filmmaker
II’ve been in love with animals for as long as I can remember. I’m the person who pulls over the car to talk to cows, who stops mid-walk to observe the quiet drama of ants, who can spend hours just watching how animals move, communicate, and express emotion. I’ve always wondered: What are they thinking? What would the world look like through their eyes?
As a documentary director and director of photography based in New York City, my work has always been driven by that curiosity and a deep respect for the non-human world. Over the years, my films have taken me from wild coastlines to remote forests, and along the way I’ve been honored to receive a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Documentary, two National AAAS Kavli Science Journalism Awards, and seven Emmy Awards. My work has appeared through HBO Films, Netflix, Showtime, PBS Nature, National Geographic, CBS, Vox, and at the Cannes International Film Festival.
THE HIDDEN LIVES OF FARM ANIMALS is a deeply meaningful project for me. I hope this film helps people feel what I’ve felt in those rare, transformative moments of connection and sparks a sense of wonder that lingers long after the credits roll.
